Some people have excess skin on the upper or lower eyelid. On the upper eyelid it could cover the eyelash and deteriorate their view or peripheral vision and the condition may cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is always done to improve puffy lower eyelid “bags” and reduce the wrinkling of skin. Excess tissue such as skin is removed, and surrounding muscles and tendons may be reinforced. It can be both functional and cosmetic surgery.
Blepharoplasty is usually performed through the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids. Incisions may be made from the inside surface of the lower eyelid (External skin resurfacing with a chemical peel or carbon dioxide laser may be performed simultaneously. This allows for a faster recovery process).
Upper blepharoplasty typically takes one to three hours to complete and is provided with local anaesthesia. External incisions are made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids. Some days’ rest and the application of cold is strictly recommended. Initial swelling and bruising are resolved in one to two weeks but at least several months are needed until the final result becomes stable. The effects of blepharoplasty are best appreciated by comparing the before and after photos of surgical patients.
The lower blepharoplasty incision is provided below the lashes and this allows removal of lower eyelid fat. Transconjuntival access does not allow excess skin to be removed. Lower blepharoplasty is better after the complete healing of the upper one. In this way we can reach the best results in your face after the first operation.
